Stump Grinding in Romsey

Romsey is a charming market town on the banks of the River Test, known for its mature trees and beautiful gardens. From the town centre's period homes to the larger rural properties in Braishfield, Ampfield, and North Baddesley, tree stumps are a common sight. Hampshire Stump Grinding delivers fast, professional stump removal throughout Romsey and the surrounding area. Our range of four grinders means we always have the right machine for the job. Even tight gardens with limited access are no problem, thanks to our handheld grinder. We leave your space clean, tidy, and ready for whatever comes next.

Our Equipment

Grinders for Any Job, Whatever the Access

Romsey properties range from snug town-centre gardens to large rural plots with paddocks and outbuildings. We carry four machines — a handheld grinder for the tightest spots, two mid-range machines for typical gardens, and a heavy-duty tracked grinder for the big jobs. There's always one that fits your situation.

Hand-Held Grinder

Hand-Held Grinder

This compact grinder is carried by hand, so it fits where nothing else will. We can bring it through a house, a garage or even down narrow side paths. It’s perfect for tiny gardens, tricky corners and hard-to-reach spots.
Small Grinder – Zipper XI-BSF1500

Small Grinder – Zipper XI-BSF1500

Our small grinder fits through the smallest of garden gates and works well in tight spaces. It’s light on your lawn and ideal for smaller stumps close to walls, fences or flower beds. It’s fast, neat and leaves your garden tidy and useable again.
Medium Grinder – Predator Power 28

Medium Grinder – Predator Power 28

The Predator 28 is the perfect blend of power and access. Its adjustable tracked base lets us move over soft ground, slopes and uneven areas with ease. It handles medium to large stumps and works well in most gardens and commercial spaces.
Large Grinder – Rayco RG55T

Large Grinder – Rayco RG55T

When you’ve got a big stump, this is the beast you want. The Rayco RG55T has huge grinding power and cuts through large hardwood stumps with speed. It’s built for large gardens, estates, building sites and commercial jobs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions about stump removal? Our FAQ section covers everything you need to know to get started.

Ask a Question
  • What service do you provide?

We specialise entirely in tree stump removal by grinding. We don’t fell trees or offer general garden services — stump grinding is our only job, and we’ve invested in the equipment and training to do it properly. We work with homeowners, landlords, landscapers, and commercial clients.

  • Does a tree stump really need removing?

It’s your call, but there are solid reasons to get it done. A decaying stump attracts fungi and insects, can send up unwanted regrowth, and sits there looking untidy while taking up space you could use. It’s also a trip hazard, especially once grass starts growing over it. Grinding it out is the simplest way to solve all of those issues.

  • How do you actually remove the stump?

We bring a grinder with a rotating cutting wheel that chews through the wood from the top down. There’s no digging or excavating — the machine does all the work. We grind below ground level and fill the hole with the chippings produced. You can leave them to break down, use them as mulch, or have the area topped with soil and reseeded.

  • What affects the cost?

The price is mainly driven by the stump’s diameter at ground level. More stumps mean a better rate per stump. In most cases, we can quote from a photo and measurement alone. For larger or more complex sites, we’ll come and look at no charge.

  • What if my garden is hard to access?

We deal with this all the time. Our smallest grinder is hand-carried, so it goes anywhere a person can walk — through houses, garages, side returns, you name it. Wider access? Our compact wheeled grinder fits through a standard garden gate. Difficult access has never stopped us completing a job.

  • Why choose grinding rather than digging the stump out?

Grinding is faster, cheaper, and far less disruptive. Excavation tears up the area around the stump and leaves a large hole that needs filling. Grinding disturbs very little beyond the stump itself. Your lawn, borders, and paths stay intact, and the whole process is over in a fraction of the time.

  • Is it worth getting a separate stump quote instead of using my tree surgeon?

Usually, yes. Tree surgeons are skilled at what they do, but stump removal is a different trade requiring different equipment. Our machines are purpose-built and more powerful, which means faster work and lower costs per stump. Getting a fell-only price from your surgeon plus a stump price from us is typically the best-value approach.

  • Should I just hire a grinder and have a go myself?

We’d advise against it. Here’s why:

    • Proper qualifications: Our team are NPTC-certified. Stump grinders are aggressive machines that demand proper training.
    • On-site safety: Every job gets a risk assessment, debris barriers, and full PPE. Without these, the risks are real.
    • Better value: Hire companies charge a flat daily fee. Our per-stump pricing often undercuts the hire cost for typical garden jobs.
    • Superior machinery: The grinders you can hire are much less powerful. Professional machines get through tougher wood in a fraction of the time.
  • What are your payment options?

    We keep things straightforward:

    • Credit Cards
    • Debit Cards
    • Bank Transfers
    • Cash

Credit and Debit Cards Accepted: Visa, MasterCard, Maestro, American Express, Samsung Pay, Google Pay, Apple Pay

We never ask for a deposit. Payment is taken after the work is finished. Multiple stumps get a discount. For anything unusual, just ask.

  • Do you serve the villages around Romsey?

Absolutely. We work throughout Romsey and the Test Valley area, including Braishfield, Ampfield, North Baddesley, Awbridge, Michelmersh, and Mottisfont. If you’re in the area, we’ll get to you.

  • I've got a large stump on a rural property near Romsey. Can you handle it?

That’s exactly what our biggest grinder is built for. The Rayco RG55T has serious cutting power and tracked drive for rough or soft ground. Big oaks in paddocks, rows of stumps on farmland, cleared building plots — we handle them all.
